About Us...
An
Industry Leader --
The
South Texas Project Electric Generating Station is one
of the newest and largest nuclear power plants in the
country. STP's
two reactors produce 2,700 megawatts of electricity,
enough for nearly two million homes.
The
plant is an industry leader in safety, reliability and
efficiency. STP has led all two-unit nuclear plants
nationwide in production for five consecutive years
(2004-2008) and has led all multi-unit sites in the
country with a net capacity factor -- a measure or reliability
-- of 98.87 percent the past three years (2006-2008).
STP also has achieved a Total Safety Industrial Accident
Rate of 0.0 (based on an 18-month average) and is now
in the top ten percent of U.S. nuclear plants for personal
safety. In addition, STP has achieved the lowest fuel
cost of all power plants in the U.S.; Unit 1
has led all 439 reactors worldwide in electricity production;
and the plant has won the U.S. nuclear industry's highest
honor, the B. Ralph Sylvia Best of The Best Award, three
times.
-- Nature Conservator --
The plant's 12,220-acre site
provides a protected habitat for several Threatened
species, including bald eagles, peregrine falcons, white-tailed
hawks and alligators. The area encompassing STP consistently
leads the U.S. with the highest number of bird species
in the National Audubon Society's annual Christmas Bird
Count.
STP
-- in cooperation with conservation groups and state
and federal agencies -- created an official sanctuary
for waterfowl, near the plant entrance on FM 521. STP's
site also includes a large tract of native Prairie Grass,
one of the few such areas left on the Gulf Coast.

and Conscientious Manager
STP Nuclear Operating Company
manages the plant for its owners, who share its energy
in proportion to their ownership interest:
Austin Energy, The City
of Austin, 16 percent
CPS Energy, 40 percent
NRG Energy, Inc., 44
percent
The plant is located about
90 miles southwest of Houston,
near Bay City. STP's reactors went online in August
1988 and June 1989, and are the sixth and fourth youngest,
respectively, of the 104 operating nationwide.
