About Us...

An Industry Leader --
The South Texas Project Electric Generating Station is one of the newest and largest nuclear power facilities in the nation. STP's two units produce 2,700 megawatts of carbon-free electricity, providing clean energy to two million Texas homes.

Through its uncompromising commitment to nuclear safety and a continuous focus on improving plant operations, STP has emerged as an industry leader. Its approximately 1,200 employees maintain an ongoing commitment to the safe and reliable operation of the facility. The company’s culture and core values focus on safety, integrity, teamwork and excellence.

In February 2009, STP achieved a Total Safety Industrial Accident Rate of 0.0 (based on an 18-month average) and now ranks in the top ten percent of U.S. nuclear plants for personal safety. For five consecutive years (2004-2008), STP has led all two-unit nuclear plants nationwide in energy production. The plant also led all multi-unit nuclear facilities in the country with a net capacity factor -- a measure or reliability -- of 98.87 percent the past three years (2006-2008). In addition, STP has earned more honors than any other nuclear plant nationwide, including the U.S. nuclear industry's highest honor, the B. Ralph Sylvia Best of The Best Award, which STP has received three times.

-- Nature Conservator --
The plant's 12,220-acre site
provides a protected habitat for several Threatened species, including bald eagles, peregrine falcons, white-tailed hawks and alligators. The area encompassing STP consistently leads the U.S. with the highest number of bird species in the National Audubon Society's annual Christmas Bird Count.

STP -- in cooperation with conservation groups and state and federal agencies -- created an official sanctuary for waterfowl, near the plant entrance on FM 521. STP's site also includes a large tract of native Prairie Grass, one of the few such areas left on the Gulf Coast.

-- and Conscientious Manager
STP Nuclear Operating Company manages the plant for its owners, who share its energy in proportion to their ownership interest:

Austin Energy, The City of Austin, 16 percent
      CPS Energy, 40 percent
      NRG Energy, Inc., 44 percent

The plant is located
about 90 miles southwest of Houston, near Bay City. STP's reactors went online in August 1988 and June 1989, and are the sixth and fourth youngest, respectively, of the 104 operating nationwide.
